Why clean water matters

Children must have clean, safe water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene to grow up happy and healthy. Yet every day, nearly 1,000 children under five die from diarrhoea because of dirty water, poor sanitation and unsafe hygiene practices.

Contamination from industry or agriculture makes water undrinkable and can lead to waterborne diseases. Unreliable rainfall and the effects of climate change mean families are forced to travel further for water and might end up using unsafe, dirty sources.

Water sanitation and supplies

We provide emergency water and sanitation supplies where crises like war and natural disasters take place. Due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, thousands of people seek refuge in displacement camps, where conditions are extremely challenging. World Vision is there, helping to address some of the immediate needs of displaced people by providing water access points and distributing hygiene kits. Women and men then use these resources to provide their families with fresh water and prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.

Long-term work with communities

Our long-term work with local communities and partners brings boreholes, hand pumps, solar-powered pumps and rainwater collection. In Uganda, Gloria and her children are delighted with the new water facilities in their local health centre. Four years ago, when her first child was born, Gloria cleaned herself with 20 litres of dirty water. Now, with the arrival of her fifth child, the health centre has been completely transformed and has clean, running water – the changes promise proper hygiene and care for Gloria and her family.

The difference clean water can make

By providing better access to safe water, you help children live healthier lives – with better hygiene and less diarrhoea. Access to clean water means that farmers are able to grow more and better crops, earn a better income, and improve everyone's diet. Children have the time and energy to go to school – instead of a long, lonely walk to collect water. They’re safer and happier - with more time to play with friends and family. It is a reason for entire communities to celebrate.
